Positively Naperville | Beneficiaries of Rotary Soup's On! express ...

Please share with Positively Naperville readers this thank-you letter from Loaves & Fishes, Hesed House, and DuPage PADS? We all want the community to know how much we valued their support of this year?s event. And as a Rotarian, I would like to thank you, as well, for your contributions to the event?s success!

?Jody Bender, Community Relations Director, Loaves & Fishes Community Pantry

The Rotary Club of Naperville recently held its fifth annual Soup?s On! event to end hunger and homelessness in our communities on October 21st. We are grateful that more than 2,100 people ? a new record ? visited the beautiful Tellabs atrium on a perfect Sunday afternoon to discover and enjoy a myriad of scrumptious foods, desserts, and beverages donated by 30 of the area?s best-loved restaurants and food purveyors. Fabulous donated silent auction items encouraged eager bidders. Entertainment provided by the talented students of Naperville School Districts 203 and 204 and Benet Academy enchanted guests throughout the afternoon. Even young children had their own special play area, staffed by the DuPage Children?s Museum. A feeling of warmth and abundance created a welcoming ambiance.

We, representing the three charitable partners and beneficiaries of this event, are humbled and elated to be the conduits for the largesse of Rotarians to our community. These funds will make a tremendous impact on our organizations? ability to serve unprecedented numbers of hungry and homeless families in Naperville, DuPage and Kane counties during the holidays and throughout the challenging winter months.

We thank the community for its support and the tireless commitment of all of the Rotary Club of Naperville members who made 2012 Soup?s On! possible. We applaud the exceptional leadership of event co-chairs Frank Slocumb and Liz Zienty, and Bill and Karen Garlough of My Chef Catering, event co-chairs and founders. Their superlative organizational skills inspired many Rotarians to volunteer their time during the past year to create this marvelous vehicle to support our community and embody the Rotarian commitment to Service Above Self. Without these Rotarians? passion and commitment, Soup?s On! would not be possible.

We all dream of a day when hunger and homelessness are distant memories, and thank all the Rotarians whose donation of time, talent and resources will improve the lives of thousands of people throughout this winter.

Dutch court says Samsung does not infringe Apple patent

AMSTERDAM (Reuters) - A Dutch court ruled on Wednesday that Samsung Electronics does not infringe an Apple Inc patent by using certain multi-touch techniques on some of the Samsung Galaxy smartphones and tablet computers.

Samsung and Apple, the world's top two smartphone makers, are locked in patent disputes in 10 countries as they vie to dominate the lucrative mobile market and win over customers with their latest gadgets.

Apple argued in September in the Hague court that Samsung infringed its patent on multi-touch function, which lets users use two fingers at one time on a touch screen.

"With these products Samsung does not infringe the claims that Apple has made," the court said in its ruling.

Apple has taken Samsung and others to court over the "pinch to zoom" function popular on smartphones and tablets.

Apple lost a preliminary injunction on this patent in the Dutch courts last year and also lost its battle in the courts in Britain against HTC Corp, and in Germany against Samsung and Motorola Mobility, which is owned by Google.

The Dutch court acknowledged that its multi-touch patent ruling on Wednesday was similar to those in Britain and Germany.

Samsung said it welcomed the Dutch court's decision, while Apple wasn't immediately available for comment.

The Hague has become an important court room battle ground between companies making mobile phones and tablet computers, as court actions there are considered to be cheap, speedy and efficient.

The Dutch court's ruling comes ahead of a decision in the United States from the International Trade Commission on Friday over claims that Samsung infringed on Apple patents.

Md. Voters Endure Bombardment Of Gambling Ads ? CBS Baltimore

OXON?HILL, Md. (AP) ? The onslaught of ads over gambling expansion has been like no other in a Maryland political year, subjecting residents to rapid-fire television spots for and against Question 7. The barrage began long before ads for other ballot questions this year and has remained frenetic.

Gambling companies have spent more than $50 million so far on advertising, with less than two weeks to go before voters decide whether to approve table games such as blackjack and a Las Vegas-style casino near the nation?s capital. That?s compared with the $34 million campaigns spent in the 2006 Maryland governor?s race ? previously the most expensive in state history.

Many voters say they?ve made up their minds and had enough of the ads.

?It?ll bring jobs,? said Terri Tolliver, who said she would vote in favor of the question during a recent outing to National Harbor, a waterfront retail and residential area in Prince George?s County. That?s where a casino will be built, just across the Potomac River from Washington, if voters approve. ?It?ll bring revenue. Why should we have to drive all the way to West Virginia to gamble, or someplace else, when it can be here??

Opponents are just as prompt in saying how they plan to vote.

?I?d prefer not to have a lot more traffic,? said Trish Villasenor, who lives at National Harbor, where a large banner supporting the expansion is fastened to a parking garage. ?I think we?re probably not ready yet for the traffic, probably not interested in that type of clientele here.?

The spending on advertising illustrates how lucrative gambling companies think the market will be around the District of Columbia. Las Vegas-based MGM Resorts International, which is eyeing National Harbor for an $800 million casino and hotel, has spent $21.7 million on its campaign. Penn National Gaming Inc., which owns a casino in Perryville in northeastern Maryland and a casino in West Virginia that draws Maryland gamblers, has fueled the fight against expansion, spending more than $27 million.

Some who work at National Harbor believe a casino is just what is needed to boost business.

?We need something that?s going to be that push, that `Pow!? Not just another restaurant, not just a small attraction for families that?s only here during a season,? said Michael Powell, a floor manager at McLoone?s Pier House, on a slow afternoon on a deck by the water.

The Maryland General Assembly passed the legislation in an August special session, but voters get the final say. The legislation included a reduction in taxes for owners of five existing casinos, partly to make up for the added competition of the proposed sixth casino. All of the casinos would be able to have table games, if voters approve.

The tax reduction has some voters opposing the idea in a year when income taxes were raised on people who make more than $100,000 a year, and lawmakers doubled the state?s flush-tax on sewer bills. Albert Almerraj, manager of the Safron Bakery Cafe in Hagerstown, said he probably wouldn?t vote for the proposal, if the lower tax rate means the state will collect less money.

?If the revenue is going to go down from the gambling casinos to the state, it?s not something I would consider voting for,? Almerraj said. ?The whole idea is to increase the revenue. God knows we need that right now.?

Lawmakers who support the expansion contend the state will make more money, despite the tax cut, and keep Maryland gamblers away from casinos in neighboring states.

Some voters say they are not necessarily troubled by lowering the tax, one of the nation?s highest on gambling.

?There are reasons that big businesses get tax breaks sometimes, and if them getting tax breaks brings additional tax revenue to the state, well, so be it. It?s the better of two evils,? said Steve Carbaugh?of Elkridge, who plans to vote for the expansion.

Another point of contention that has been frequently noted in the ads is whether the state?s proceeds will go to education. That bothers some voters who are skeptical about where the money will end up, after lawmakers in Annapolis shifted money around to fill budget holes during the recession and its aftermath. Other voters are confident at least a significant portion of the money will go toward helping to pay for one of the state?s top expenses.

?Politicians always use schools to do different things, but you just hope that at least some, if not all, that they?re promising go into schools,? said Michael Senyoh of Hyattsville, who will vote for the expansion.

Student Debt Debacles

Most federal student loans have rates of 6.8 percent (or less) and offer broad consumer protections that allow people who lose their jobs to make lower, affordable payments or to defer payment until they recover financially.

Private student loans ? from banks and other private institutions ? typically come with variable interest rates and fewer consumer protections, which means that borrowers who get into trouble have few options other than default. Many borrowers did not learn about the differences between private and federal loans until after they became deeply indebted. And because of confusion about variable rates, they are sometimes shocked to learn what they owe when that first bill arrives.

Why your business may need an HR advisor!

Posted on 23 October 2012 by admin

One of the most essential and important aspects of managing a business, big or small, is the way in which one deals with the workforce and the management of human resources. It is precisely for this reason that there is a growing demand for HR professional and HR advisors in modern business firms. Since most corporate houses already have a set structure in place and utilize a large employee force it is essential to have someone who can not only advise the company when it comes to hiring of new talent and personnel, but someone who can take care of the day-to-day hassles and smoothly handle the large workforce.

Every business would do well with a HR expert and if you are a looking for expert services from outside then you can bring in help from the industry experts like ClearSky-HR.co.uk HR Advisors who offer efficient, constructive and smart management solutions.

While most people tend to believe that HR advisors and consultants are relegated to managing only the giant firms and businesses that could not be farther from the truth. It is in fact the budding and growing businesses that require the expert help of a HR advisor. Since most small and medium businesses generally are not well acquainted with the handling f a large employee force, it is best to hire a professional who will not only oversee and guide you in the hiring process, but will co-ordinate between team leaders on a day to day basis, keep up employee morale, form a communication bridge between the various hierarchical positions in the office and ensure that discipline is maintained.

Not only does a competent HR advisor offer all the above advantages, but he most essentially will deliver much needed legal expertise when signing new contracts and will help in altering some of the work conditions in the office that could improve productivity. In a world where more and more issues are being bound by strict legal codes, this is an absolute necessity so that you avoid ugly tussles in the future.

Jordan foils Qaeda plot, arrests 11 militants: state TV

AMMAN (Reuters) - Jordan has foiled a plot by an al Qaeda-linked cell to bomb its shopping centres and assassinate Western diplomats, state television said on Sunday, thwarting an attempt to destabilize the key U.S. ally.

Security forces had detained 11 suspects, all Jordanians, in connection with the plot, which envisaged carrying out attacks in the capital Amman using smuggled weapons and explosives from Syria, according to security officials cited by television.

The plot had been active since June.

Minister of Information Samih al Maaytah said the arrests underscored the serious threat posed by radical "terror groups" seeking to undermine the kingdom's long tradition of stability.

A key U.S. ally in the Middle East and Israel's peace partner, Jordan enjoys close ties with Western intelligence agencies and has often been targeted by al-Qaeda and other Islamist militants.

The cell had targeted two major shopping malls in the capital and was planning a bombing campaign in the capital's affluent Abdoun neighborhood, where many foreign embassies are located.

A security source said the suspects had manufactured explosives "aimed at inflicting the heaviest losses possible".

"The group was able to devise new types of explosives to be used for the first time and planned to add TNT to increase their destructive impact," said the source.

The same security source said there was a crucial link with Syria where President Bashar al-Assad is battling to put down an uprising against his family's rule.

"Their plans included getting explosives and mortars from Syria," the security source told Reuters, saying the militants had sought to strike at a time of regional upheaval when the country's security establishment is over stretched.

"EXPLOSIVE BELTS"

The authorities said they had seized large quantities of ammunition, machine guns and other items such as computers. The militants were training to use "suicide bombers using explosive belts and booby-trapped cars", said another security source.

Maaytah told reporters that members of the militant group had spent some time in Syria, without saying when they had returned to Jordan.

"This group arrived from Syria. They have been going in and out," said Maaytah, explaining that the case had been transferred to the state security prosecutor.

Another security source said the cell had been fighting for "some period" alongside Islamist rebel groups in Syria.

Jordan has in recent months arrested scores of hardline Islamist fundamentalists along its northern border with Syria as they were about to cross into the country to join jihadist groups fighting to overthrow Assad.

If Jordan allows Assad's opponents to aid the armed uprising, Amman's security forces fear the Syrian government could retaliate by sending agents to carry out bomb attacks inside the country.

Intercepted electronic mail showed that the cell had received advice from Iraqi Qaeda explosives experts.

Jordan regularly arrests Islamist suspects and puts them on trial in military courts that human rights groups say are illegal and lack proper legal safeguards. Many civic groups also say many of the Islamist cases are politically motivated.

In 2005, al Qaeda claimed responsibility for three suicide bombings that ripped through luxury hotels in Jordan's capital killing dozens of people.

Key and Peele find laughs in racial quandaries

NEW YORK (AP) ? As a comedy team, Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele are very funny.

As guys who both lay claim to biracial status (black fathers, white mothers), they share a state of informed in-betweenness that gives their comedy extra punch and extraordinary insight.

Race fuels much of "Key & Peele," their sketch-and-standup half-hour series airing Wednesdays at 10:30 p.m. EDT on Comedy Central. Straddling the great divide between White and Black, they deliver a special brand of laughs, along with the occasional epiphany.

"There's been a lot of racial comedy over the years," says Peele. "But being biracial, mixed individuals, we realized there's been nothing from our perspective."

Even so, their mission isn't social reform.

"We're not trying to lead anybody toward any specific conclusion," says Peele, "except that, ultimately, race is an absurd thing."

"It always boomerangs back to culture," Key adds.

They are happy to show how.

The comedy of Key and Peele is clever, keenly observed and fearless. But never mean.

Consider their sketch set in the antebellum South. They play slaves who, placed on the auction block, grow increasingly indignant that no one is bidding on them, while all the other slaves are snapped up.

Then there's the sketch set in Germany in 1942, as a Nazi colonel looking for escaped Negroes finds Key and Peele hiding out ? in white-face. With their nervous denials and foolish-looking disguise, they manage to convince their pursuer that they're not one of THEM.

Peele displays TV's best impersonation of Barack Obama in several sketches where the unflappable president is joined by Luther, his "anger translator" who channels, unfiltered, what Obama is really thinking.

For instance, after Obama calmly tells viewers that "Gov. Romney and I have different ideas on how to best help the American people," Luther (played by Key) screeches his unbridled version of the message: "I killed Osama bin Laden! And YOU strapped your dog to the top of your car!"

In person, Key and Peele are both affable, reflective chaps who genuinely seem to get a kick out of each other.

Key, the tall, hyper and bald partner, is 41 and grew up in Detroit. Peele, husky and more laid-back, is 33 and hails from New York.

They met a decade ago in Chicago, where Key was performing in a Second City improv troupe and Peele, then in the Amsterdam-based Boom Chicago comedy group, was visiting as part of a cast swap between Boom and Second City.

Needless to say, they found they had much in common.

Both soon found their way to Los Angeles where they spent several years in the ensemble of Fox's "Mad TV." Key also appeared on the sitcom "Gary Unmarried" and "Reno 411!" Jordan performed on "Chocolate News" and "Childrens Hospital."

Then, earlier this year, they unveiled the first season of "Key & Peele," an ideal showcase for them to find the funny in issues that may or may not address race explicitly, but often use race as a way to score laughs.

"We love to show bravado, and then undercut that bravado," says Key. Example: two hit men are on a stakeout when one of them, struggling to maintain his gangsta toughness, announces he has just soiled his pants.

Does this sketch somehow demean the black race?

"We want the audience to think, 'They were going to do a hit, but he pooped himself!'" says Key, bursting into laughter. "That's not about being black, brother. That's just funny!"

In another sketch, Key and Peele play a pair of natty businessmen grabbing lunch at a soul food diner. As they place their orders, they slip into a duel of "competing blackness" to see who can think of the most "authentic" soul-food cuisine. The grand winner is Key's character, who orders up "a platter of stork ankles, an old cellar door, a possum spine and a human foot." With gravy.

A routine like that makes a telling comment on how people feel a need to claim, defend, or reassert membership in one group or another. And this holds true especially when someone doesn't naturally identify with any group.

Sometimes the urge for membership can lead a person astray. In one sketch, Key plays a prison inmate who, being bald, seeks kinship with a group of likewise bald prisoners. But rather than accept him, they keep beating him up. No wonder. They're shaved-head white supremacists.

"You can talk about a comfortable WASP experience or a comfortable blackness," says Key matter-of-factly, "but we've never occupied either of those spaces."

All the better for their comedy to demonstrate how people modify their style in response to each person they encounter. Key and Peele are both splendid actors who, with the help of transformative makeup, adopt a seemingly limitless repertoire of characters, dialing in cultural traits with amazing nuance.

One sketch finds Key as a man with a cell phone speaking "white" to his wife about attending the theater. But when he's joined at a street corner by a glowering ghetto-looking dude (played by Peele), the man begins adapting with "blacker"-sounding lingo. Then the traffic light changes and Peele's character, out of earshot of Key, breathes relief in effeminate tones: "Oh, my God," he trills into his own cell phone, "I almost TOTALLY got mugged right now."

Key and Peele call it code-switching, and all code-switching, they say, is playing characters. They've been doing it all their lives.

"I wonder," Peele muses, "how much both Keegan and I were pulled toward a performing career ? where we're shifting personalities and doing different characters ? because we grew up walking a sort of racial tightrope."

"We've been doing some strange form of sketch comedy since we were very, very little," Key declares. "We just didn't know we were doing it."

Now they do it in a happy alliance.

"We both find the same things funny," says Key when asked to explain their creative process. "The biggest difference is our approach. I'm wholly physical, I have to act things out. I get overwhelmed when I approach things intellectually. But that's exactly the planet my partner comes from."

"I might say that you're a little bit more theatrical and character-based," Peele proposes, "while my sense of humor is a little bit more absurd." Then another way of saying it occurs to him: "I like choices out of left field. You like choices that are there for a reason."

"That's the best answer to the question," Key nods, pleased.

"That's good for us to think about," says Peele.

"That's nice for us to know," says Key.

Childhood Pets Make Lasting Impact on Our Lives | Life With Cats

American Humane Association Survey ?People, Pets and the World We Share? Reveals Extraordinary Bond Between People And Their Pets

Grief of Losing Childhood Pets Carries Over into Adulthood, Affects Future Pet Ownership

A dramatic new survey released today by American Humane Association reveals the most compelling evidence to date of the vital and extraordinary bond between people and their pets, particularly between children and the animals they grew up with.? Indeed, four in 10 individuals say that the loss of a childhood pet from injury, disease or old age continues to affect them as adults. And, an even greater number of adults (44.4%) note that they are still affected by a pet who was given away, ran away or had an uncertain disposition.

These were the major findings of ?People, Pets and the World We Share,? a survey conducted by American Humane Association?s Animal Welfare Research Institute to examine the lasting impact a pet has on a child and the remarkable bond and loyalty they share.? Based on an email survey sent to its nationwide database of supporters and Facebook followers, respondents were asked to remember one animal from their childhood in answering the questions.

Dogs were by far the most popular childhood pet remembered, accounting for over 70 percent of responses.? Cats were second at 23.8%, with the remaining including a myriad of animals including horses, rabbits and hamsters.? 93.2% respondents were women, 44.8% were 30-49 years old, 43.2% over 50 with 12% under the age of 30.

?Experiences with a childhood pet remain throughout a person?s lifetime and showcase the transformative power of the human-animal bond and the amazing role that animals play in the lives of children,? says Dr. Robin Ganzert, President and CEO of American Humane Association.? ?Animals in our lives help to create the social network that is a cornerstone of creating humane communities. As the nation?s first humane organization, our unique dual mission is to improve the welfare, wellness and well-being of both children and animals. We are pleased to share the results of this survey as an important step for future work to assess and understand the world of people, pets and the inextricable link we share.?

Overcoming Grief Important Factor in Future Pet Ownership, Reducing Shelter Numbers

The survey backed the recent findings in a pet ownership study released earlier this year by American Humane Association and PetSmart Charities. ?In Phase One of the ?Keeping Pets (Dogs and Cats) in Homes Retention Study,? interviews with more than 1,000 previous pet owners revealed that lasting grief over the loss of a previous pet was a significant obstacle towards owning a new pet.?? Highlighting the emotional intricacies of the human-animal bond, one in five (20%) of previous dog owners and one in six (17%) of previous cat owners cited the loss of a beloved dog or cat as a reason they chose not to have another.? Helping people to overcome their reluctance to own another pet in adulthood is vital to decreasing the three to four million adoptable animals who are being euthanized in our nation?s shelters.

For many children, the passing of an animal might be their first experience dealing with the death of a member of their family.? Respondents were encouraged to provide comments about the animal they selected for the survey, and their emotional stories illustrate the lasting impact and irreplaceable bond they shared with their beloved pets.

Also illuminating is how parents of the respondents were remembered depending on the parents? involvement with the loss of a pet.? Some comments speak to a parent?s role in nurturing the human-animal bond, and a child?s ongoing feelings of fondness toward their parents as the result, while others express bitterness toward a parent that gave away a pet without their child?s knowledge.

A sampling of these comments follows:

??.I was only five when we had to euthanize [our pet] due to cancer.? My parents did note tell me until they brought him home to bury in our backyard.? I can still remember sitting there bawling.? That was 36 years ago.?

?? I was a lonely little girl, living with my father as my parents fought over my custody. This little dog was ALL I had?.. She was taken away from me, I never was told where to and I?ve never forgotten her? it was traumatic.?

?? ? I remember the details very clearly of his sudden illness, going to the vet, him being euthanized, and bringing him home to be buried?. I?ve always been thankful to my parents that the situation was handled with grace and dignity for our beloved Barney??

??To me, losing a pet is no different that losing a relative or friend.? They become a part of your family, and although they can?t communicate in forms of human language, the love and the bond that is created cannot be denied.? I?ve had to deal with the loss of two pets in my life and just like the death of a loved one, I grieved and still think about the time we had [together] often?.?

??Caring for a pet showed me the power of compassion and unconditional love??

?? Fuzzy was my best friend, my confidant and kid all rolled into one.? She helped me grow up and never feel alone?. I love and miss her greatly to this day??

?? My dog Stormy was there when I was brought home from the hospital and was by my side from that day on.? He was my best friend, my protector, my playmate and my confidant.? He died when I was 11 and my memories of him have never, and will never, die?.?

??my dog disappeared and I spent months searching for him.? I still have his picture to this day and am still haunted [by his loss] He was devoted to me and me to him??

?I know it might sound strange but I find it harder to see an animal pass away than a human.?

??Domino wasn?t just a pet, he was my best friend and every time I was sick, he stayed with me?if I had a [epileptic] seizure he stayed with me and then follow me around the house to be sure I was safe.? He meant the world to me and nobody could ever replace him or what he meant to me.? He was my rock for 18 years and I was his and I will never forget him.???

??having a pet as a child and being given the responsibility of caring for a creature that was dependent on its humans left me with a lifelong love of all animals and sympathy for those that have been neglected or abused??

Race tightens for Obama, Romney ahead of final debate

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The race between President Barack Obama and rival Mitt Romney has tightened in the days before their final televised debate, with the Republican closing the gap on Obama's slight but steady lead in a Reuters/Ipsos online poll.

Data from the daily tracking poll released on Saturday showed the Democratic incumbent with a small lead over the former Massachusetts governor, but the margin has narrowed from Friday and from results earlier in the week.

Forty-six percent of likely voters said they would vote for Obama in the November 6 election, while 45 percent said they would back Romney.

On Friday, Obama was ahead by three percentage points at 46 percent compared to 43 percent for Romney.

"Our numbers have shown ... Obama fairly steadily ahead by three points over the last couple of days and today's data does show a tightening in those numbers," Ipsos pollster Julia Clark said.

"It's very much neck and neck. I anticipate actually that we're going to see these numbers neck and neck all the way to Election Day."

Romney got a big boost from his strong performance in the first debate on October 3 with Obama, who was widely judged to have given a passive, lackluster performance.

The president charged back with a sharper appearance in their second debate on October 16, comforting frustrated Democrats. While opinion polls showed most viewers thought Obama won that debate, Clark said he did not, in the end, get a noticeable bounce in the polls as a result.

"I wouldn't say that we saw a second-debate bounce for either candidate," she said, while predicting that the third and final debate on Monday would not affect the race dramatically unless one of the candidates made a significant gaffe.

The final debate focuses on foreign policy. Obama is spending the weekend at the presidential retreat at Camp David in Maryland to prepare, and Romney is doing the same in Florida, a battleground state where the debate will be held.

Though national polls give a sense of the mood of the electorate, the winner of the White House race will be determined by electoral votes from a handful of states such as Ohio and Florida that swing, historically, between voting for Republicans and Democrats in presidential elections.

A RealClearPolitics average of polls on Saturday showed Obama ahead in Ohio by 2.5 percentage points and Romney ahead in Florida by 2.1 percentage points.

The precision of Reuters/Ipsos online polls is measured using a credibility interval. In this case, the poll has a credibility interval of plus or minus 3.0 percentage points for likely voters.

George Zimmerman judge OKs question: Who was the real Trayvon Martin?

The new judge in George Zimmerman's second degree murder trial allowed defense attorneys to subpoena social media networks and peruse Trayvon Martin?s school records to determine whether the slain teen had a violent past.

By Patrik Jonsson,?Staff writer / October 20, 2012

George Zimmerman, the former neighborhood watch volunteer charged with second-degree murder for the shooting death of Trayvon Martin, looks on during his hearing at the Seminole County Courthouse in Sanford, Florida on Friday.

In sparking a nationwide call for justice, Trayvon Martin?s parents painted the slain teenager as sweet, aspiring, and well-meaning ? notions backed up by a baby-faced photo that led President Obama to suggest, ?If I had a son, he?d look like Trayvon.?

But on Friday, a new judge in the second degree murder case against George Zimmerman, the 29-year-old volunteer watchman accused of profiling, accosting, and then murdering an unarmed Martin on Feb. 26, made a major ruling that could alter that image.

Circuit Court Judge Debra Nelson allowed, with limitations, defense attorneys to dig deep into Martin?s social media scribblings and school records to determine whether the boy had a violent streak that may have put Zimmerman into a self-defense stance.

Gun nation: Inside America's gun-carry culture?

Whether any evidence dug up by Zimmerman?s defense team ever makes it to the media or the public will be up to Judge Nelson. But the ruling opens up a major new break in what?s shaping up to be an emotional, heart-wrenching trial that will explore not just Zimmerman?s guilt, but the extent to which race played into both Zimmerman?s actions and decisions by police in the aftermath.

?I have had anecdotal evidence that there were videos out there suggesting that [Martin] involved himself in MMA (mixed martial arts) fighting, he had an experience level with that,? Mark O?Mara, Zimmerman?s attorney, said after Friday?s court hearing. ?I think the judge hit it on head ? that reputation for violence is an issue in this case.?

The shooting caused a national uproar about racial profiling and permissive gun laws when local police in Sanford, Fla., where Martin was killed, let Zimmerman go free, citing the 2005 ?Stand Your Ground? law in Florida, which negated the legal doctrine of ?duty to retreat? in the face of an attack. Forty-four days later, a special prosecutor filed second degree murder charges against Zimmerman, who is now out on bond at an undisclosed location in Seminole County.

On Friday, Martin?s parents, Tracy Martin and Sybrina Fulton, called Judge Nelson?s decision to allow the school and social media subpoenas a travesty, suggesting that by opening up Martin?s records it would allow defense attorneys to ?make a dead child seem as if they?re the perpetrator.?

Yet there?s a sound legal reason for the judge allowing the defense to go on the offense, says George Dekle, a law professor at the University of Florida. True, he says, the prosecution has stated that the basic facts of the case ? a grown man profiles a boy as a criminal, instigates a confrontation, then shoots him dead when the boy defends himself ? substantiate a second degree murder conviction.

(AP) ? Police searched for a gunman who wore a painter's mask as he set fire to a home before going on a shooting spree early Saturday, killing a father and his 4-year-old son and injuring a woman and two other young children near Los Angeles.

The 30-year-old father was shielding two of his children when he was shot, Inglewood Police Chief Mark Fronterotta said.

Also, the 28-year-old woman ? said to be the children's mother ? carried the wounded 4-year-old to a neighbor's yard after the attack.

"This extraordinary rescue attempt by the mother occurred in spite of the fact that she had gunshot wounds to both legs," a police department statement said.

A SWAT team has set up a perimeter and was using dogs to search for the attacker, who may have lived in a rear house on the property, Fronterotta said.

Police have no motive. But a neighbor, Judy Castellanos, told the Los Angeles Times that the suspect lived in one of three units on the property and described him as "really weird" and "dangerous." She said he had not paid his rent for years and that a new property owner had been trying to evict him.

"He had been asked to leave by the end of this month," she told the newspaper, adding that he was reclusive and would not let anyone look inside his home.

Five neighboring houses in Inglewood were evacuated as officers searched residences and the trunks of cars. Other nearby residents were told to remain inside with their doors locked. The suspect was described as armed and dangerous.

Detectives determined the suspect set the house ablaze at about 4 a.m. before he began shooting, Fronterotta said.

He apparently wore a painter's mask during the attack to try to shield his identity, the chief said. Investigators were trying to determine whether he fled or remained in the house as it burned.

Television footage showed a home gutted by flames and a plume of smoke rising over the residential neighborhood early Saturday.

The woman was being treated for gunshot wounds and was in critical condition, as was a 6-year-old boy with a gunshot wound to the pelvis and a 7-year-old girl with a gunshot wound to the chest, according to a department statement.

The father died in surgery, as did the 4-year-old boy.

An 8-year-old boy was uninjured.

Ghana's Mahama vows high growth, low inflation if elected

ACCRA (Reuters) - Ghana President John Dramani Mahama said he would aim to oversee annual economic growth of at least 8 percent while keeping comsumer prices in check in the West African State, if he wins elections in December.

Mahama became interim leader of the oil, cocoa, and gold producer nation after the death of late president John Atta Mills in July and is expected to face a tough election contest against the country's opposition.

"Our macroeconomic goals for the next four years are an average GDP growth rate of not less than eight percent per annum, a sustained rate of single digit inflation, low interest rates, an overall budget deficit of approximately five percent of GDP, and gross international reserves of not less than four months import cover," Mahama said.

He was speaking at a meeting organised by the Accra-based Institute of Economic Affairs, a political think tank.

"Overall, our economic policies will aim at the attainment of a per capital income of of at least $2,300 by the year 2017," he said adding that the country would achieve these goals by carefully managing resource revenues.

Ghana's annual inflation rate dipped to 9.4 percent in September from 9.5 percent a month before, leading analysts to predict the central bank will hold its prime interest rate steady at 15 percent until at least the end of the year.

Mahama will face main opposition rival Nana Akufo-Addo and former first lady Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings in December 2 elections in Ghana, which is keen to maintain its reputation as one of Africa's most stable and investor-friendly countries.

Akufo-Addo lost narrowly to Mills in 2008 elections, and may seek to challenge the ruling party on what some Ghanaians perceive to be slower-than-expected development on the back of the country's oil wealth.

Ghana started producing from its offshore Jubilee oil field in 2010, but production rates have fallen short of projections due to technical problems, according to field operator Tullow.

Employee files FMLA suit? - Business Management Daily

Employees have no more than three years following an alleged FMLA violation to file an FMLA-interference lawsuit. And that?s only if the employer?s violation was ?willful.? In most cases, they have just two years to get that lawsuit going.

That?s still longer than employees have to file most other federal employment discrimination claims, such as those under Title VII.

Recent case: Paul sued United Airlines in March 2011 for allegedly having illegally denied him FMLA leave in 2007. More than three years had passed before he filed his lawsuit.

The court quickly threw out his claim, citing the three-year deadline, even though Paul argued that United Airlines had again violated the FMLA later. He had wanted to connect the violations and go back further. He didn?t get that opportunity. (Simkus v. United Air Lines, No. 11-C-2165, ND IL, 2012)

Justin Timberlake, Jessica Biel to wed this week: Us Weekly

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Actors Justin Timberlake and fiance Jessica Biel will be walking down the aisle in a star-studded wedding ceremony this week in Italy, according to celebrity magazine Us Weekly.

The couple threw a casual pre-wedding party on Wednesday in Puglia, Italy, at the Cala Masciola beach on the Adriatic Sea, the magazine said. Guests included comedian Andy Samberg, who co-starred with Timberlake in an Emmy-winning "Saturday Night Live" digital short and the film "Friends With Benefits," a romantic comedy.

Representatives for Timberlake and Biel did not return calls from Reuters for comment.

This is the first wedding for singer-actor Timberlake, 31, and "Total Recall" actress Biel, 30, who have been dating on and off since 2007. They announced their engagement at the beginning of this year.

Timberlake has previously had high-profile relationships with pop singer Britney Spears and actress Cameron Diaz.

Tennessee native Timberlake, who rose to fame as a singer in boy band N'Sync, forged a successful solo music career before moving into films. He played Napster founder Sean Parker in the Oscar-nominated Facebook film "The Social Network" and more recently starred alongside Amy Adams and Clint Eastwood in "Trouble With The Curve."

Biel, who was born in Minnesota, started her career on television in the long-running family drama "7th Heaven." She broke into movies with a starring role in the 2003 remake of horror flick "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" and has since been seen in "The A-Team" and "New Year's Eve."
