5 Reasons Why Long Distance Relationships Never Work

People in long distance relationships are like the kid in your class who does the extra hard math problems at the end of each section just for fun. Or the person who wakes up at 4AM to run 16 miles every day, up a mountain in the rain. They?re doing what most of us do, except they?re making it a thousand times harder than it needs to be. Relationships are often confusing, brain-hurting messes of enigmas, even without 5000 miles in between you and your significant other. Add distance in and hoo boy, are you in for a bumpy ride.

Never is a harsh word. But it?s easier to say than ?More often than not, these relationships don?t work out? or ?In most cases, they usually don?t work out.? So what I really mean is: Here are some reasons why you should think twice before starting a long distance relationship. Because they, more often than not, in most cases, don?t work out.

1) It?s hard to trust someone you hardly see in person.

You?re putting a lot of faith in someone far far away, who you often have no reliable means of checking up on (internet video chats don?t count). Building trust is a key component in any relationship, and building that trust requires face time. It?s being able to look into that person?s face and see his commitment to you. Seeing it in person.

When it comes to trust, talk is cheap. Anybody can say they?re trustworthy. Anyone can say they love you. But you need to see it to believe it. Real genuine trust is shown in a person?s actions, not just words. In long distance relationships, you see each other so infrequently that it?s tough to build up that trust. You visit each other, then go back to your separate lives, without a clue what the other person is doing while you?re away for the next 5 weeks. How are you supposed to build long lasting trust?

2) It usually leads to cheating.

Unfortunate, but true. Not in every case, but in many. Let?s face the facts: Your significant other is miles and miles away, you?re lonely and depressed about it, and there are tons of single people in the town where you live. Statistically, you?re probably going to think about cheating.

Unlike cheating when your significant other lives down the block, cheating in long distance relationships is slightly understandable. [Though by a very meager percent. Cheating is terrible, and I highly suggest not doing it to anyone.] You can?t see your significant other whenever you want, unlike in most relationships, and you?re only human. Most people would only be able to hold out for so long before the arms of somebody way more convenient (and local) start looking real good. If you?re one of the good ones, you?ll end your long distance relationship before it comes to the cheating stage. But it?s easy to be tempted if you?re thinking there?s no way your significant other will find out about your straying.

3) Distance leads to frustration. Frustration leads to fighting. Fighting leads to break ups. It?s the inevitable cycle of long distance relationships.

Nobody thinks about the distance in their relationship and goes, HOORAY! This is so much fun! It?s frustrating, for everyone. You?re starting off your relationship at a point of frustration. Yes, frustration leads to fighting, which leads to breakups in general, but you?re beginning your relationship with frustration. Most relationships start off at a neutral point. If things get bad later, it?s because differences and incompatibilities build up, creating a frustrating situation. With long distance relationships, the frustration is built right into the fabric.

4) These relationships go on way longer than they should.

?In short distance relationships (nobody calls them that, but just go with it), when things start getting really bad, a break up usually happens shortly after. [A lot of short distance relationships also go on way longer than they should. People drag relationships out in general.] But the reason why long distance relationships almost ALWAYS go on longer than they should is because of the distance.

If you see someone every day and fight with them every day, you?ll only be able to take so much before you snap and break up. If you see someone once a month and fight with them once a month, there?s way more time in between for you both to cool down, forget why you were fighting, and think your relationship is still working well. And with the distance being so hard, it?s easy to blame every fight you have (even the long phone ones) on the fact that you?re so far away and missing each other. The fighting could mean that you?re incompatible, but it takes way longer to figure that out when you have the easy scapegoat of distance to blame instead.

5) You?ll never have a future unless you live in the same place.

It?s pretty hard to start a family when you live in different states. This is obvious, but it seems to be something a lot of long distance-ers don?t truly think about until the relationship isn?t going so well. You get frustrated by the distance and then it?s ?You need to move here or this isn?t going to work.? Well, that was always true?even when you were thinking about starting the relationship. In order to have a real future with someone, you have to live in the same place. Relationships are hard enough. Starting a relationship off without even having that simple requirement met makes it a zillion times harder.

If you really want a long distance relationship to work, it?s best to have a plan to end the distance soon. Don?t make relationships harder than they have to be, for crying out loud. Life is hard enough. Think twice before you bring a situation into your life that?s going to make life even harder for you. The person better be ?the one,? with bells and whistles and singing birds, to be worth all that effort. Otherwise, take a stroll down to the local watering hole and find a date there instead.

Rajapaksa Secretly inaugurated China Project in Jaffna

?

Feb-24-2012 18:36printcomments

As reported earlier by TamilNet, the genocidal Colombo not only seals off Eezham Tamils from Tamil Nadu, but also effectively checks Indian ambitions there with proxy Chinese projects.

Funds to help construct a school in Vanni, were redirected for a hospital renovation and swimming pool, dedicated by Sri Lanka President Majinda Rajapaksa earlier this month on 06 Feb.

(COLOMBO, Sri Lanka) - SL President Mahinda Rajapaksa, during his last trip to Jaffna on 06 February, ceremonially declared open a renovated hospital and a swimming pool, both of which were criticised by local media, especially the diversion of funds intended to reconstruct schools in Vanni to the completion of modern swimming pool in Jaffna.

However, Mr. Rajapaksa had also inaugurated a China backed controversial project in Maathakal under the eyes of Sri Lanka Navy, without any public knowledge, informed sources in Jaffna now reveal.

The controversial project to install windmills and solar panels along the coastal stretch from Thiruvadi-nilai to KKS and lease the occupied land of Eezham Tamil families, deprived of resettlement, to a Malaysian corporate of Chinese connections for 20 years was the one secretly inaugurated by the SL President together with the SLN.

In October 2011, the Malaysian corporate, KLS Energy entered into an agreement with China Machinery and Engineering Corporation to 'develop' wind/solar hybrid power project in Jaffna.

The agreement was part of Malaysian Prime Minister's US$ 10 billion economic cooperation initiative with China.

The Malaysian corporate of Chinese connection will be installing windmills and solar panels to produce electricity and 'sell' it to the people of Jaffna, permanently replacing the coastal people and the proud palmyra palms that now stand there.

As reported earlier by TamilNet, the genocidal Colombo not only seals off Eezham Tamils from Tamil Nadu, but also effectively checks Indian ambitions there with proxy Chinese projects.

Yoshitha Rajapaksa, the son of SL president Mahinda Rajapaksa and an officer in the SL Navy and, is also playing a role in maintaining the colonial interests of Colombo, informed sources further said.

Yoshitha was commissioned as an Acting Sub Lieutenant in the Sri Lanka Navy in March 2009.

During the visit, Mr. Mahinda Rajapaksa, stayed in the newly constructed bungalow of the SL colonial military governor in North, Maj. Gen. (retd) G.A. Chandrasiri, the sources further added.

The bungalow was constructed using more than 190 million rupees from the budget of Northern Province.

Protests spread for a third day throughout Afghanistan despite apologies from NATO and U.S. officials for the inadvertent burning of Qurans. NBC's Atia Abawi reports.

By msnbc.com news services

KABUL -- Afghanistan wants NATO to put on public trial those who burned copies of the Quran at a NATO base, President Hamid Karzai's office said?Thursday, after a third day of bloody protests over the incident.

It said NATO had agreed to a trial, but that could not be immediately confirmed.

Karzai had earlier accused a U.S. officer of "ignorantly" burning copies of the Quran, in an incident that has deepened anti-Western sentiment in a country NATO is trying to stabilize before foreign combat troops leave by the end of 2014.

Demonstrations have drawn thousands of angry Afghans to the streets, chanting "Death to America!" amid violence that has killed 11 people including two U.S. service personnel.

Top Bodybuilding Tips To Grow Your Muscles Fast | New Health and ...

New Health And Fitness.Org - Health Information You Can Use

Your body can truly benefit when you decide you want to build muscles. Working out is a good way to get a better-looking body and improve your health.click here

You can keep a record of important markers, such as the diameter of your arms around the biceps, to keep track of your results. You can read these tips to get solid, helpful advice.

Read the following article for advice to help you get started.

If you struggle to do this, then you might need to use lighter weights. A good rule of thumb is to make each exercise half last 5 to 10 seconds, allowing up to a third of a minute per rep.

Steroids have been shown to cause damage to the liver, reduce good cholesterol and even cause men to increase their breast size.

Do not assume that you should do this by simply eating more. Instead, you should make it a point to consume a balanced diet.

A well-balanced exercise routine must include a cardio portion.

Try going to the gym with friends; you are more likely to attend regularly this way.

Your friends' encouragement can help boost your adrenaline levels so that you can push yourself harder in your workouts. This, in turn, will improve muscle growth.

Stretching properly protects you from injuries related to working out.

Over time, you will be able to take on weights that are heavier. When you begin exercising regularly, you should be able to add five percent more weight for every session.

Each will build your strength, and therefore your muscle mass, while also improving muscle condition.

You might not be fully recovered from your previous workout if you feel weak.

There are various kinds of exercises that focus on different things, like muscle building, toning and particular muscle groups.

By doing this, you can allow one muscle to relax while you are working on the other one.

This will allow you to bump up your workout intensity and you won?t have to be in the gym as long.

Vary your workout routine from week to week. If you aren?t excited by your routine, then you will be more reluctant to work out.

Change your workout to do a variety of exercises, and alternate the muscle groups you work on in a single setting. By changing your workout, you keep your workout fresh and you'll be more likely to stick with it.

Technique is far more important than amounts of weight used or time needed to complete the exercise when weight training.

However, cheating too much is not advisable.

Keep a controlled rep speed. Don?t compromise your posture and balance.

You?ll feel better and happier than you ever have if you have a healthy body, and the goal of building muscle can help you become healthier. Along with cardio exercises, weight training will give you better results instead of just cardio exercises.

Utilize both of them, and workout frequently in order to ensure that you achieve results very quickly.

if you are taking any supplements to get your abs then forget it i discovered this and tried it its amazing try it now.get abs now

Yosemite's alpine chipmunks take genetic hit from climate change

Yosemite's alpine chipmunks take genetic hit from climate change [ Back to EurekAlert! ] Public release date: 19-Feb-2012

Berkeley -- Global warming has forced alpine chipmunks in Yosemite to higher ground, prompting a startling decline in the species' genetic diversity, according to a new study by researchers at the University of California, Berkeley.

The study, appearing Sunday, Feb. 19, in the advance online publication of the journal Nature Climate Change, is one of the first to show a hit to the genetic diversity of a species because of a recent climate-induced change in the animals' geographic range. What's more, the genetic erosion occurred in the relatively short span of 90 years, highlighting the rapid threat changing climate can pose to a species.

With low genetic diversity a species can be more vulnerable to the effects of inbreeding, disease and other problems that threaten species survival, the researchers said.

"Climate change is implicated as the cause of geographic shifts observed among birds, small mammals and plants, but this new work shows that, particularly for mountain species like the alpine chipmunk, such shifts can result in increasingly fragmented and genetically impoverished populations," said study lead author Emily Rubidge, who conducted the research while a Ph.D. student at UC Berkeley's Museum of Vertebrate Zoology and the Department of Environmental Science, Policy and Management. "Under continued warming, the alpine chipmunk could be on the trajectory towards becoming threatened or even extinct."

Rubidge worked with Craig Moritz, professor of integrative biology and director of the Museum of Vertebrate Zoology; James Patton, professor emeritus of integrative biology and curator of the Museum of Vertebrate Zoology; and Justin Brashares, associate professor in the Department of Environmental Science, Policy and Management.

The new findings build upon previous research that found major shifts in the range of small mammals in Yosemite National Park since the early 1900s. In 2003, biologists at UC Berkeley began an ambitious resurvey of Yosemite's birds, mammals, reptiles and amphibians, retracing the steps originally taken between 1914 and 1920 by Joseph Grinnell, founder and former director of the Museum of Vertebrate Zoology.

The Grinnell Resurvey Project, led by Moritz and museum colleagues, found that many small mammals in Yosemite moved or retracted their ranges to higher, cooler elevations over the past century, a period when the average temperature in the park increased by 3 degrees Celsius, or about 5.4 degrees Fahrenheit.

It is no surprise that the alpine chipmunk (Tamias alpinus) would be more sensitive to the temperature change, since it is a high-elevation species endemic to California's Sierra Nevada, the researchers said. In the early 1900s, Grinnell and colleagues sighted alpine chipmunks at elevations of 7,800 feet. Now, the alpine chipmunk appears to be sticking to even higher elevations, retracting its range by about 1,640 feet upslope.

To test the genetic impact from that loss of geographic range, researchers compared genetic markers from 146 modern-day alpine chipmunks with those from 88 of their historical counterparts. Samples were collected from seven paired sites throughout Yosemite.

As a control, the researchers also looked at the genetics both historic and modern of lodgepole chipmunks (Tamias speciosus), a lower elevation species that had not changed its range over the past century.

The analysis of genetic markers revealed a significant decline in "allele richness" among the recently sampled alpine chipmunk populations compared with their historic counterparts. Moreover, the researchers noted that the modern chipmunks were more genetically differentiated across sites than in the past, a sign of increased fragmentation in the alpine chipmunk population.

In comparison, there were no significant changes in genetic diversity detected among the lodgepole chipmunks, a species found at elevations from 4,900 to 9,800 feet.

"Much of what we read and hear about the effects of climate change on biodiversity is based on model projections and simulations, and these models typically involve many moving parts and lots of uncertainty," said Brashares. "Thanks to the baseline provided by Joseph Grinnell's pioneering efforts in the early 20th century, we are able to go beyond projections to document how climate is altering life in California. The research led by Emily is novel and important because it shows empirically that climate change has led to the loss of genetic diversity in a wild mammal over the last several decades."

Moritz added that this study exemplifies how patterns of change in California's ecosystems can be uncovered through analyses of fossil, historic and modern records.

"At the heart of this whole enterprise is the incredibly dense historic record and specimens we have at UC Berkeley from 100 years ago," said Moritz. "These collections allow us to conduct sophisticated analyses to better understand how ecosystems are reacting to environmental changes, and to create more detailed models of future changes."

Cosmetic Dentistry: The Basics | New Health and Fitness

New Health And Fitness.Org - Health Information You Can Use

The art and science of dentistry has made advances such that one need not remain resigned to stained or chipped teeth. There are several cosmetic techniques available that allow one to correct dental anomalies that can impair appearance.

Orthodontics deals with the prevention and treatment of dental and facial irregularities. Braces are used in orthodontics for the treatment of crooked teeth, protruding teeth, widely spaced teeth, an under bite, among other things. Even before braces are inserted into the patient, the chance of you having to deal with a painful procedure is likely.

For example, before braces, your orthodontist has to see whether you may need some teeth extracted. Teeth extraction, you know that is going to be uncomfortable. Another pre-braces procedure is spacers for braces , these are either rubber or metal, and are placed in between teeth that are too close together, and they can be very painful.

Once the braces are installed, you might be use to the pain, and thus they may only cause a certain level of discomfort. Metal braces made from titanium are expensive and need to be worn for 2-3 years.

So yes, they will be in your mouth for quite some time. Separating teeth is not an easy and quick fix. But non-invasive straightening braces cost less and require to be worn for a lesser period of time. Lingual braces are placed behind the teeth and are ideal for those who lay emphasis on cosmetic appeal.

The objective of cosmetic dentistry, which is elective dental work, is to improve the appearance of the teeth and to enhance one?s smile. Cosmetic dentistry does not contribute to the health of the teeth, thus braces are rarely needed, they are usually just desired by those who wish to improve their smiles.

Cosmetic orthodontists are even trying to get you to look good while you have braces on, providing clients with braces color. This is done by having the ligatures of the braces have color. This is popular among teens and those who want their braces smile to stand out a little more.

A lot of people have a fear of going to the orthodontist, because there is almost always pain involved in the procedures used by an orthodontist. Beauty is pain some say. If you want those straight teeth, it will hurt. It is up to each individual to decide whether the pain is worth it.

HTC to give fans and developers an early taste of ICS on international Sensation phones

Android Central

HTC will give some customers an early preview of its Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich updates, a spokesperson for the manufacturer has told us. This will start with the HTC Sensation and Sensation XE in Europe (sorry, Tmo Sensation 4G owners), and leaves open the possibility that it'll be extended to other popular handsets in the future.

"HTC knows how excited many of its customers are about the latest technology and HTC products. They want to help support that excitement and say "thanks" by providing early access to the latest software for some of HTC’s loyal fans and developers, beginning with a preview of the Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) software upgrade for the HTC Sensation and HTC Sensation XE in Europe."

Further details will be announced through HTC's official Twitter and Facebook accounts, though it's expected that members of HTC's "Elevate" beta program be first in line for the preview.

HTC recently announced that it'll roll out the finished Ice Cream Sandwich updates for the original Sensation, as well as the XE, XL and 4G variants by the end of March, so even if you're not among the lucky few to get the preview version, you shouldn't have too long to wait.

Zach McGowan | Photo Credits: Brian To/FilmMagic

Jody will be dishing up more sausage on Shameless.

The Showtime series has promoted Zach McGowan to a series regular for Season 3, Deadline reports.

Showtime renews Shameless, House of Lies and Californication

McGowan plays recovering sex addict Jody Silverman, who's been seen this season coming between Karen (Laura Wiggins) and Lip (Jeremy Allen White) and also "airing out" his anatomy while cooking breakfast in the nude.

McGowan is also a sous chef and has appeared in Iron Chef America (so that's where he got his kitchen skills!). His other credits include CSI: Miami, Cold Case and Body of Proof. He currently appears in the web series Dating Rules from My Future Self as Jagger.

Showtime renewed Shameless for a third season earlier this month. Production on the new season will begin in July.

Sexy Tips for LDR Lovers
All romantic relationships require feelings of intimacy to survive. Without feelings of connectedness and, yes, at least a bit of sexual chemistry romantic relationships will whither and die. When a couple lives?together intimacy can be as simple as a morning kiss or a leisurely caress. When lovers live apart maintaining intimacy is not as easy. Here are some suggestions to help you keep your flame burning across the miles.

Real Time Connectedness

Invest in a web-cam and a microphone for each of you. You can use your web-cam and microphone combo to go on virtual dates as chaste or as naughty as you like from watching a movie ?together? to engaging in mutual self stimulation with visual and vocal encouragement. You can also just leave the cam on as you go about your regular activities so you can see what the other is doing for a sense of connection.

You can also build a sense of connectivity by sharing things though you are far apart. You can rent the same movie and agree to watch it at the same time then later talk about it via phone, email, or chat. You can both go outside and stargaze while on the phone together. If you live in the same time zone you can watch sunrises and sunsets ?together.? You can do this by phoning each other and talking, by web-cam, or simply by agreeing to do the same thing at the same time.

Pieces of You

Make a custom sex toy cast from your own body to send to your partner. Ask your lover to think of you when she or he uses it.

Send your partner an item of jewelry or outer garment which would instantly remind him or her of you that he or she can wear to feel connected to you. You can also send or give a piece of worn clothing to carry some of your scent. A pair of your sexiest panties mailed in a double Ziploc bag should put a smile on his face.

Invest in some inexpensive digital voice recorders. Record loving, naughty, or sexy messages on them and ship them to each other for on-demand listening.

Take erotic photos or video of yourself and send them to your lover. For added impact you can send your erotic photos in a frame with a digital recording feature.

Share your plans to build a future together. The absence of plans to have a future together may erode a loving relationship. Talk about your hopes and dreams for the years to come. Consider ?we? and ?us? in your plans.

Talk about what you want to do the next time you get together. You can do this on the telephone but it might be more fun to create lists to send to each other.

Define your expectations for while you are apart. In any relationship, communication is key but the clarity of expectations and communications in long distance relationships is absolutely vital.

You Can Send It In A Letter

Invest in some stationary and write love letters to send via snail mail. You can personalize them with a dab of your aftershave or an imprint of your lips in lipstick or a lock of your hair. Write love poems or stories of your erotic fantasies and put them in the mail. Your writing skills don?t need to be fabulous, just write from the heart or the groin.

Living Rather Than Waiting

Maintain a ?normal? lifestyle. Do not spend your time waiting for your partner to return to your life to experience life. Go out with friends, pursue your hobbies. Be your own separate person. Personally, I think this is something many traditional relationships could use a lot more of.

Waiting to begin or resume your life until your partner joins you is both unhealthy and unrealistic. It can generate unnecessary frustration and resentment.

Best wishes to all of you separated from your loved ones by spatial distances.

?

Happy Loving!

Learning to Write in American English Can Be Fun and Easy When ...

Published by Robertson | February 13, 2012 | | 71

There are many ways to approach learning American English. The information I will be sharing was developed in the classroom by a teacher with many years of experience and found to be, after years of use and testing, one of the easiest and most effective methods available.

Writing or speaking in English can open up a very large audience for you to approach with your ideas and products. It can give you an increased number of people who you meet who then might be able to hear and understand you. If you are a student trying to take classes in an American College or University, it will help you learn more easily, in addition to more thoroughly understanding the material or subject you are learning about.

A pretest will give you the level you are currently spelling on so you know where to start. On the schedule you select you will be given a list of words plus sentences which will help you select the correct word because of the content of the other words in the sentence.

That allows you to learn how to use the word in a sentence.

Having more of a grasp of the words matched with content in the sentence speeds your ability to get conversational with English quickly in addition to learning how to spell. The easiest part of working with the basics of the English language is to feel comfortable with the way it is used which the sentence.

Since writing is just another form of speaking, you will also become a better writer more quickly. Just the confidence you gain is amazing. You can then relax and keep going with your project to learn English, write in English and look forward to connecting by sharing your ideas with many others around the world.

Whitney Houston, superstar of records, films, dies (AP)

LOS ANGELES ? Whitney Houston, who ruled as pop music's queen until her majestic voice was ravaged by drug use and her regal image was ruined by erratic behavior and a tumultuous marriage to singer Bobby Brown, has died. She was 48.

Beverly Hills police Lt. Mark Rosen said Houston was pronounced dead at 3:55 p.m. Saturday in her room on the fourth floor of the Beverly Hilton. A Los Angeles County coroner's official said early Sunday that her body had been taken to a morgue.

"There were no obvious signs of any criminal intent," Rosen said.

Houston's publicist, Kristen Foster, said the cause of death was unknown.

Rosen said police received a 911 call from hotel security about Houston at 3:43 p.m. Saturday. Paramedics who were already at the hotel because of a Grammy party were not able to resuscitate her, he said.

Houston's death came on the eve of music's biggest night ? the Grammy Awards. It's a showcase where she once reigned and where she will be remembered Sunday in a tribute by Jennifer Hudson, organizers said.

Her longtime mentor Clive Davis went ahead with his annual concert at the same hotel where her body was found. He dedicated the evening to her and asked for a moment of silence as a photo of the singer, hands wide open, looking to the sky, appeared on the screen.

Houston was supposed to appear at the gala, and Davis had told The Associated Press that she would perhaps perform: "It's her favorite night of the year ... (so) who knows by the end of the evening," he said.

Houston had been at rehearsals for the show Thursday, coaching singers Brandy and Monica, according to a person who was at the event but was not authorized to speak publicly about it. The person said Houston looked disheveled, was sweating profusely and liquor and cigarettes could be smelled on her breath.

Two days ago, she performed at a pre-Grammy party with singer Kelly Price. Singer Kenny Lattimore hosted the event, and said Houston sang the gospel classic "Jesus Loves Me" with Price, her voice registering softly, not with the same power it had at its height.

Lattimore said Houston was gregarious and was in a good mood, surrounded by friends and family, including daughter Bobbi Kristina.

"She just seemed like she was having a great night that night," said Lattimore, who said he was in shock over her death.

Aretha Franklin, her godmother, also said she was stunned.

"I just can't talk about it now," Franklin said in a short statement. "It's so stunning and unbelievable. I couldn't believe what I was reading coming across the TV screen."

The Rev. Al Sharpton said he would call for a national prayer Sunday morning during a service at Second Baptist Church in Los Angeles.

"The morning of the Grammys, the world should pause and pray for the memory of a gifted songbird," Sharpton said in a statement.

In a statement, Recording Academy President and CEO Neil Portnow said Houston "was one of the world's greatest pop singers of all time who leaves behind a robust musical soundtrack spanning the past three decades."

At her peak, Houston was the golden girl of the music industry. From the mid-1980s to the late 1990s, she was one of the world's best-selling artists. She wowed audiences with effortless, powerful and peerless vocals rooted in the black church but made palatable to the masses with a pop sheen.

Her success carried her beyond music to movies, where she starred in hits like "The Bodyguard" and "Waiting to Exhale."

She had the perfect voice and the perfect image: a gorgeous singer who had sex appeal but was never overtly sexual, who maintained perfect poise.

She influenced a generation of younger singers, from Christina Aguilera to Mariah Carey, who when she first came out sounded so much like Houston that many thought it was Houston.

But by the end of her career, Houston became a stunning cautionary tale of the toll of drug use. Her album sales plummeted and the hits stopped coming; her once serene image was shattered by a wild demeanor and bizarre public appearances. She confessed to abusing cocaine, marijuana and pills, and her once pristine voice became raspy and hoarse, unable to hit the high notes as she had during her prime.

"The biggest devil is me. I'm either my best friend or my worst enemy," Houston told ABC's Diane Sawyer in an infamous 2002 interview with then-husband Brown by her side.

It was a tragic fall for a superstar who was one of the top-selling artists in pop music history, with more than 55 million records sold in the United States alone.

She seemed to be born into greatness. In addition to being Franklin's goddaughter, she was the daughter of gospel singer Cissy Houston and the cousin of 1960s pop diva Dionne Warwick.

Houston first started singing in the church as a child. In her teens, she sang backup for Chaka Khan, Jermaine Jackson and others, in addition to modeling. It was around that time when music mogul Clive Davis first heard Houston perform.

"The time that I first saw her singing in her mother's act in a club ... it was such a stunning impact," Davis told "Good Morning America."

"To hear this young girl breathe such fire into this song. I mean, it really sent the proverbial tingles up my spine," he added.

Before long, the rest of the country would feel it, too. Houston made her album debut in 1985 with "Whitney Houston," which sold millions and spawned hit after hit. "Saving All My Love for You" brought her her first Grammy, for best female pop vocal. "How Will I Know," "You Give Good Love" and "The Greatest Love of All" also became hit singles.

Another multiplatinum album, "Whitney," came out in 1987 and included hits like "Where Do Broken Hearts Go" and "I Wanna Dance With Somebody."

The New York Times wrote that Houston "possesses one of her generation's most powerful gospel-trained voices, but she eschews many of the churchier mannerisms of her forerunners. She uses ornamental gospel phrasing only sparingly, and instead of projecting an earthy, tearful vulnerability, communicates cool self-assurance and strength, building pop ballads to majestic, sustained peaks of intensity."

Her decision not to follow the more soulful inflections of singers like Franklin drew criticism by some who saw her as playing down her black roots to go pop and reach white audiences. The criticism would become a constant refrain through much of her career. She was even booed during the "Soul Train Awards" in 1989.

"Sometimes it gets down to that, you know?" she told Katie Couric in 1996. "You're not black enough for them. I don't know. You're not R&B enough. You're very pop. The white audience has taken you away from them."

Some saw her 1992 marriage to former New Edition member and soul crooner Bobby Brown as an attempt to respond to those critics. It seemed to be an odd union; she was seen as pop's pure princess while he had a bad-boy image and already had children of his own. (The couple had one daughter, Bobbi Kristina, born in 1993.) Over the years, he would be arrested several times, on charges including DUI and failure to pay child support.

But Houston said their true personalities were not as far apart as people may have believed.

"When you love, you love. I mean, do you stop loving somebody because you have different images? You know, Bobby and I basically come from the same place," she told Rolling Stone in 1993. "You see somebody, and you deal with their image, that's their image. It's part of them, it's not the whole picture. I am not always in a sequined gown. I am nobody's angel. I can get down and dirty. I can get raunchy."

Brown was getting ready to perform at a New Edition reunion tour in Southaven, Miss., as news spread about Houston's death. The group went ahead with its performance, though Brown appeared overcome with emotion when his voice cracked at the beginning of a ballad and he left the stage.

Before his departure, he told the sell-out crowd: "First of all, I want to tell you that I love you all. Second, I would like to say, I love you, Whitney. The hardest thing for me to do is to come on this stage."

Brown said he decided to perform because fans had shown their loyalty to the group for more than 25 years. During an intermission, one of Houston's early hits, "You Give Good Love," played over the speakers. Fans stood up and began singing along.

It would take several years for the public to see the "down and dirty" side of Houston. Her moving 1991 rendition of "The Star Spangled Banner" at the Super Bowl, amid the first Gulf War, set a new standard and once again reaffirmed her as America's sweetheart.

In 1992, she became a star in the acting world with "The Bodyguard." Despite mixed reviews, the story of a singer (Houston) guarded by a former Secret Service agent (Kevin Costner) was an international success.

It also gave her perhaps her most memorable hit: a searing, stunning rendition of Dolly Parton's "I Will Always Love You," which sat atop the charts for weeks. It was Grammy's record of the year and best female pop vocal, and the "Bodyguard" soundtrack was named album of the year.

She returned to the big screen in 1995-96 with "Waiting to Exhale" and "The Preacher's Wife." Both spawned soundtrack albums, and another hit studio album, "My Love Is Your Love," in 1998, brought her a Grammy for best female R&B vocal for the cut "It's Not Right But It's Okay."

But during these career and personal highs, Houston was using drugs. In an interview with Oprah Winfrey in 2009, she said by the time "The Preacher's Wife" was released, "(doing drugs) was an everyday thing. ... I would do my work, but after I did my work, for a whole year or two, it was every day. ... I wasn't happy by that point in time. I was losing myself."

In the interview, Houston blamed her rocky marriage to Brown, which included a charge of domestic abuse against Brown in 1993. They divorced in 2007.

Houston would go to rehab twice before she would declare herself drug-free to Winfrey in 2009. But in the interim, there were missed concert dates, a stop at an airport due to drugs, and public meltdowns.

She was so startlingly thin during a 2001 Michael Jackson tribute concert that rumors spread she had died the next day. Her crude behavior and jittery appearance on Brown's reality show, "Being Bobby Brown," was an example of her sad decline. Her Sawyer interview, where she declared "crack is whack," was often parodied. She dropped out of the spotlight for a few years.

Houston staged what seemed to be a successful comeback with the 2009 album "I Look To You." The album debuted on the top of the charts, and would eventually go platinum.

Things soon fell apart. A concert to promote the album on "Good Morning America" went awry as Houston's voice sounded ragged and off-key. She blamed an interview with Winfrey for straining her voice.

A world tour launched overseas, however, only confirmed suspicions that Houston had lost her treasured gift, as she failed to hit notes and left many fans unimpressed; some walked out. Canceled concert dates raised speculation that she may have been abusing drugs, but she denied those claims and said she was in great shape, blaming illness for cancellations.

Houston was to make her return to film in the remake of the classic movie "Sparkle." Filming on the movie, which stars former "American Idol" winner Jordin Sparks, recently wrapped.

Simon Cowell told CNN's Piers Morgan on Saturday night that he had been considering Houston as a possible judge on the U.S. version of his talent competition, "The X Factor."

"She would have been the ultimate, ultimate mentor to any contestant coming on the show," Cowell said.

Real Estate Email Marketing Maximizes Your Exposure

Article by Chris Robertson

There?s little doubt that the U.S. real estate market is undergoing a profound transformation. After several years of freewheeling lending practices and unsurpassed increases in home valuations, the real estate market is undergoing a major correction. Home values are dropping in many areas around the country, and some homeowners are facing an impending uptick in their adjustable rate mortgage payments, placing them in an untenable position. In short, it?s a volatile market. Lenders are tightening the criteria for mortgages, and the window for subprime lending is closing. Some homeowners who are holding subprime mortgages are facing foreclosures, while others are trying to sell their homes before they find themselves in a negative equity situation. As a result, real estate professionals, investors, and home sellers are scrambling to gain an edge in a competitive marketplace. Real Estate MarketingLong gone are the days when traditional methods of real estate marketing are sufficient to move properties. A sign on the lawn, a Multiple Listing Service listing, and an open house still have their place, but they comprise only one facet of an effective real estate marketing campaign. Just as in most other areas of business, the Internet is playing a crucial role in real estate. Online listings of homes for rent, homes for sale, and foreclosures draw an increasing number of buyers and investors. Photographs and video are increasingly being used to whet the appetites of potential buyers. Still, online listings and multimedia presentations are relatively passive forms of marketing in this competitive era. Those who are on the cutting edge are utilizing the Internet to their best advantage, and taking strategies from the playbooks of those in other fields.Email Marketing as a ?Push? StrategyIf drawing potential real estate buyers to an online listing is a ?pull? strategy, then real estate email marketing is a ?push? strategy ? one that makes sense in today?s marketplace. After all, retailers and e-tailers use email marketing to their best advantage. Email inboxes are stuffed with large and small business emails alike. It makes sense that real estate email marketing can also be effective, in that it delivers information about agents, developers, sellers, and their respective properties directly into the hands of interested potential buyers.Email Marketing is Easier than it SeemsAt first blush, real estate email marketing may seem out of reach for many people. After all, their expertise is in real estate and they may not be very tech savvy. On the contrary, there are online real estate services that make email marketing a cakewalk for virtually anyone. When looking for an online email marketing service, choose one that can help you create emails, manage your contact lists, and obtain tracking reports. Essentially, you should be able to send your first email marketing piece in less than an hour. The best services have ?wizards? that allow you to, for example, put together email newsletters using a Web interface and on a single screen. Templates and click-and-drag functionality allow you to easily arrange text, upload photos, and instantly see what your recipients will see when they receive your email. Once you?ve sent your emails or newsletters, the service should enable you to track the results, telling you how many emails you sent, how many bounced back, how many people opened the email, how many clicked on the links, and how many forwarded it on to others. There?s little doubt that real estate email marketing is a cutting edge tool that helps push your message into the inboxes of potential buyers. And in today?s competitive environment, it?s an advantage you can?t afford to be without.
